Relocation sequence

Plan the move in order.

  1. 01

    Before the move

Confirm timing, work location(s), documents and any employer relocation arrangements.

  2. 02

    Choosing the area

Compare the places you need to reach and the property features you value using consistent, neutral criteria.

  3. 03

    Housing decision

Compare buy vs rent, temporary housing, lease / sale overlap, budget and maintenance burden.

  4. 04

    Commute

Test the actual trip at your working hours, including parking, access requirements and a backup route.

  5. 05

    Schools / education

If relevant, verify boundaries, enrollment and records directly with the district.

  6. 06

    Utilities

Confirm providers and service responsibility for the exact address and building.

  7. 07

    State / local administration

Check current DMV and other administrative requirements with the appropriate official office.

  8. 08

    Moving logistics

Confirm mover scope, building reservations, storage and possession arrangements.

  9. 09

    Arrival checklist

Confirm access, utilities, documents and appointments before the first day.

  10. 10

    After closing / ownership

Create a maintenance baseline, register with the association where applicable and organize records.

Adapt the plan

Different schedules, different constraints.

01

Physicians

Map hospital and clinic locations, shift schedules, on-call travel and the timing of a contract start. Compare commute options at the hours you expect to travel.

Compare hospital-system geography against your actual work sites, shift and call schedules. Verify parking and off-hours access with the employer. Consider airport access, commute reliability, maintenance burden, housing flexibility and relocation timing when weighing buy vs rent. No employment relationship is implied.

02

Executives

Coordinate office access, travel frequency, airports, temporary housing and any employer relocation requirements. Clarify who approves costs and deadlines.

For corporate relocation, confirm reimbursement rules and document timing directly with the employer before committing costs.

03

Military

Work backward from orders and reporting dates while leaving room for changes. Confirm benefit and financing questions with the appropriate official resources and lender.

Coordinate PCS timing, temporary housing, installation access and documents with the responsible offices. Use official VA resources for financing education. HLI is not affiliated with DoD or any federal agency.

04

Federal employees

Review the actual duty station, in-person schedule and transit options. Avoid committing to a commute based solely on a typical office-hours estimate.

Compare the actual duty location, reporting schedule, public transit and access requirements; a broad employment-hub label is not a commute plan.

05

International relocations

Allow time for documentation, financing, temporary housing and utility setup. Coordinate immigration, tax and legal questions with qualified specialists.

Confirm documentation, banking and administrative requirements with the appropriate professionals and agencies. Allow for temporary housing while arrangements are verified.

06

Commute, hospitals, airports & Metro

Build a map of the destinations that matter to you. Test routes and schedules directly with the relevant operators, including off-peak and weekend travel.

07

Schools & lifestyle

Use school district resources, boundaries, and publicly available performance information. Compare the amenities and daily routines you personally value.

08

Housing, buy vs. rent & temporary housing

Compare likely tenure, transaction costs, flexibility and total carrying costs. A temporary rental can provide time to learn the area before buying.
